Microsoft Songsmith

Microsoft Songsmith is a tool developed by Microsoft Research that automatically generates musical accompaniment to go along with your singing.

As magical as this sounds, the actual end result is your own personal cheese music orchestra. It's not surprising though, given the production treatment that Microsoft gave their commercial for the product.

In its made-for-TV musical, a daughter shows her father how Microsoft Songsmith can change their lives into a High School Musical alternate reality. It's difficult to tell if this was made tongue-in-cheek or genuinely bad, given that it's Microsoft. The actors are even using Songsmith on a Mac, even though the software is only for Windows.

(Ab)using Microsoft Songsmith
What's more interesting than using this software, is misusing this software. As soon as Microsoft released this product onto the internet, videos sprouted up on YouTube that utilize the software for purely comedic outcomes. One popular method, is to reinterpret popular songs using this software. The results are disastrous.

Someone even used the software to add accompaniment to a speech by Barack Obama.

Even if the software produces extremely cheezy music, it still is a pretty awesome piece of technology. You can download a demo from Microsoft. You'll need a Windows-based PC, however, so if you're on a Mac you'll have to stick to GarageBand's AutoTune plugin.

Master P's "Souljas"

Quite frankly, this music video by Master P for the song "Souljas" is amazing.

Be on the lookout for unique stylistic elements:
  • A virtual cyber-army commandeered by Master P
  • Sedans with machine guns and rocket launchers mounted on them
  • 3D fly honeys getting freaky on tank in the French Quarter
  • Prompts for the viewer to "WYLD OUT"
Enjoy.

Club Neo

Club Neo is a vampire dance club located in the dark heart of Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. It is located next door to an Urban Outfitters. It is probably the scariest place I can think of. At night, I have nightmares of being karate kicked by Indiana Jones wearing a leather kilt. When I go to Club Neo, my nightmares become reality.

Music
Club Neo offers a wide variety of music that caters to the darkness that lurks inside your soul. When you party at Club Neo, you know you will be raving to the best selection of electronic dance music Chicago has to offer. If you are a fan of Industrial music, you may want to venture to Neo on saturdays, where DJ Ryan Bedlam will be spinning your favorite Industrial and Power Noise classics. Just don't forget to bring your hard hat.

Fitting In
If you are use to traditional dance clubs, you may not be accustomed to the style of dancing found at Neo. The dancing at Neo is more of a mystical evocation of emotion and inner torment rather than traditional bump n' grind club fare. If you're having trouble keeping up with the moves of the other dancers, you may want to make up some impromptu karate moves or start stomping your feet to the rhythm to blend in. With practice, you'll be raving with the best of them on the dance floor.

Highly Recommended.

Visit Club Neo on the internet.
